The planets in astrology are not distant objects acting upon us from the outside — they are living archetypes, the cast of inner characters through which the soul pursues its own evolution across time. Each one carries a particular quality of consciousness: a way of loving, of asserting, of thinking, of growing, of letting go. From an evolutionary perspective, a chart is not a fixed portrait but a snapshot of intention — where the soul has been, what it is still carrying, and what it has come into this life to grow toward. To read the planets is to read that unfolding story from the inside.

The inner cast you were born with
Think of the planets as the what of astrology — the core drives and functions of the psyche. The Sun speaks to the essential self and the path of becoming who you are meant to be. The Moon holds the emotional inner world and the patterns inherited from all that came before. Mercury governs how you perceive and communicate; Venus, how you love, value, and find beauty; Mars, how you act and claim your desire. Beyond these personal voices, Jupiter and Saturn map the rhythm of expansion and structure — when to reach and when to commit. The outer planets work on a deeper, more transformative scale: Uranus liberating us from the past, Neptune dissolving the ego’s smaller story, and Pluto — in evolutionary astrology, the planet of the soul itself — carrying its deepest desires, its compulsions, and its evolutionary intent. Chiron threads through it all, showing where our oldest wound is meant to become our truest medicine.
Each of these energies is neutral at heart. There is no “good” or “bad” planet — only energy that can be lived consciously or unconsciously, in its evolved expression or its wounded one. The purpose of working with the planets is to bring more of yourself into awareness, so that what once ran you from the shadows becomes something you can grow through on purpose.
How to read this collection
The guides here take each planet in turn, beginning with the two great luminaries — the Sun and the Moon — and moving outward through the personal, social, and transpersonal planets, closing with Chiron. You can read them in order to feel the whole symphony, or follow your intuition to the planet calling you now. Often the one you resist is carrying the very growth your soul is reaching for.
As you read, hold each planet as a mirror rather than a verdict. A chart describes a field of potential and a direction of growth, never a fate sealed against you. The same Mars that can wound can also protect; the same Pluto that can overwhelm can also remake you from the ground up. Your awareness, your desire, and your willingness to evolve are always part of the equation — in this view, you are an active participant in your own becoming, not a passenger.

In astrology the planets are the core energies of the psyche — the Sun your essential self, the Moon your emotional nature, Mercury your mind, Venus your loving and valuing, Mars your drive, and so on out to Pluto and Chiron. In evolutionary astrology each one describes a way your soul is learning to grow.
A natal chart works with ten planets — the Sun and Moon (technically luminaries), Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto — and most evolutionary astrologers also include Chiron, the wounded healer. That gives the eleven guides gathered here.
No single planet rules the chart; each one matters. That said, evolutionary astrology pays special attention to Pluto and its relationship to the Moon’s nodes, because together they describe the soul’s deepest patterns and the direction of its growth. The Sun and Moon are always central to who you are.
Think of it as one sentence: a planet (an inner drive) expresses through a sign (a style or quality) and within a house (an area of life). You need all three to read a chart as a living whole — which is why this library has a pillar for each.
