One of the first things people want to know, often a little warily, is whether an astrology reading will tell them their future. It is a fair question, and my answer tends to surprise them: no — and I would be doing you a disservice if it did. There is a real and important difference between astrology as I practise it and fortune-telling, and understanding it changes what you can expect from a reading entirely.
What fortune-telling claims to do
Fortune-telling, in the popular sense, promises to reveal fixed future events. It says this will happen, on this timeline, to you — a new job in the spring, a stranger you will marry, a windfall, a warning. Its appeal is obvious. It offers certainty in the face of the unknown, and it places the future outside your hands, as something already written and merely waiting to be read.
The trouble is not only that this rarely turns out to be accurate. It is that, even when it comforts, it quietly disempowers. If your life is already decided, your choices become spectacle rather than authorship. You are reduced to an audience for your own existence.
What an evolutionary astrology reading actually does
The astrology I practise begins from a completely different premise. The birth chart is not a script of coming events; it is a map of meaning — a portrait of your temperament, your patterns, your gifts and your growth edges, and the developmental themes your life keeps returning to. Reading it is less like predicting the weather on a fixed date and more like understanding the climate you live in: the prevailing conditions, the terrain, the seasons you tend to move through.
So instead of “you will…”, a reading speaks in terms of “this is the pattern you carry”, “this is the tension you were born into”, “this is the direction your growth seems to lie”. It describes the shape of a life so that you can meet it with more understanding — and, crucially, more agency. This is the same honest, exploratory spirit I have described in my account of what actually happens in a reading.
The question of free will
At the centre of the difference sits a single conviction: you are a participant in your life, not a passenger. A birth chart may describe strong tendencies — real patterns that shape how you meet the world — but a tendency is not a fate. Two people with the same difficult placement can live it in very different ways, depending on awareness, choice and circumstance. The chart shows the raw material; what you build with it remains yours.
This is why I think of astrology as a tool for consciousness rather than prophecy. Its purpose is not to hand you a sealed envelope marked “the future”, but to make the invisible patterns of your life visible — so that you can work with them deliberately instead of being unconsciously run by them. Naming a pattern is the first step to having a choice about it.
But what about timing?
People reasonably ask: if you look at transits — the movements of the planets against the birth chart — aren’t you predicting? It is a good question, and the distinction matters. Transits describe themes and seasons, not fixed outcomes. A season of Saturn crossing a sensitive point, for instance, tends to bring questions of responsibility, structure and consequence to the foreground. What it does not do is dictate a specific event on a specific day.
So when I look at your timing in a cosmic weather reading, I am describing the kind of developmental weather ahead — the nature of what is being asked of you — not issuing forecasts. Knowing the climate of a season lets you dress for it wisely. It does not, and should not, remove your freedom to decide how you walk through it.
Why this distinction is the whole point
I hold to this line carefully, because it is not a technicality — it is the ethic at the centre of the work. A practice that hands you fixed predictions asks you to surrender your authority. A practice grounded in understanding hands your authority back. The first can leave you smaller; the second is meant to leave you more capable of living your own life.
